Specifically, Professor Maxwell wanted to be able to show, as convincingly as possible, that a gyroscope will always react at 90 degrees to an applied force.

When this massive brass bell-shaped top is spinning an interesting stability can occur - push on the stem with an object (like a pencil) and the top will push back, forcing the stem against that object, and friction will cause the stem to roll along and trace the edge of the object.

In this design the stem will trace along the edge of a metal spiral, clinging to it like a magnet - but magnets are NOT involved here. The key to this design is to make the contact point/tip of the top at its own centre of mass, then any frictional force in contact with the stem will produce a torque about the contact point at right angle to the direction of friction that creates the stabilizing force (students of physics may recognize application of the right hand rule here). An extreme physics toy!

If you look closely, you will see a slight difference in behaviour, depending on which direction you spin the top. Spin it in one direction and the metal tip holds closely to the spiral as it reaches the centre, and switches to the other side of the spiral. Spin it the other way and the metal tip separates briefly from the spiral, when it reaches the centre.

THIS ITEM REQUIRES SOME ASSEMBLY.

Assembly will take 10-15 minutes. Well, no reason really, except that a friend of ours just christened it that, and the name seems to have stuck. It is really very simple, which is why we like it! A plastic channel supports the row of 4 ball bearings, and a spherical neodymium magnet. At first sight, it looks like 5 ball bearings!

Very slowly, you roll the loose ball bearing towards the magnet. As it approaches, it is pulled into the magnet very quickly, neodymium magnets are very strong. It was made to a very high quality, it was supplied in a metal flight case, and it cost USD750! After they sold out, we sold a cardboard construction kit to make a Pseudoscope, but it was time consuming to make, and the lack of glass front silvered mirrors reduced the quality of the image. It was very cheap though. Now, however, we think we have the best of both worlds. Designed by Terry Pope, this Pseudoscope kit is made from precision laser-cut pieces of acrylic plastic, and it is supplied with 4 glass mirrors. Although you do need to put the Pseudoscope together yourself, it is a much easier construction task than the cardboard kit, and delivers a high quality Pseudoscopic image.

The Pseudoscope creates one of the most remarkable of all optical illusions, and was first described by Sir Charles Wheatstone in the 1830s. The Pseudoscope swaps the incoming images, so that the right eye sees what the left eye would have seen, and vice versa. The Pseudoscope therefore does to front and back what a mirror does to left and right. This means that foreground becomes background and visible background becomes foreground, or more simply, background advances, foreground recedes.

When you view objects with this scope, the convex becomes concave. A tree turns inside out as it were - it's front branches appear at the back, whilst the back branches come out in front, hanging or suspended in mid-air as their support is eclipsed by branches in front.

The scope will suggest to the viewer that a person's face is hollow or concave but your brain refuses to accept such nonsense and so peoples' heads merely appear odd or uncomfortable to look at. It is best then to choose to look at a landscape or tree or anything which may suggest ambiguous perspective. In a real sense Pseudoscopic vision fights `normal vision'. It is, after all, a major alteration to the way information is being presented to the brain for processing, and some people, not all, find there is initially at least, a tendency to suppress the extraordinary interpretation of space it reveals. Because of this unfamiliarity, the full Pseudoscopic experience might take a little time to assert itself. Some people find that they can never see a Pseudoscopic image.

These Pseudoscopes come as a kit form, and require assembly.

The main body of the Pseudoscope is made of pieces of laser-cut acrylic. Our version consists of what appears to be three boxes of playing cards. Ask a volunteer to pick up all three decks, and it will feel to them that the weight of the three decks is exactly what they would expect it to be. If you then ask them to just pick up the top box of cards, they will tell you that it is heavier than all three packs put together! In fact, this is not true. It just seems to be true. And it is a very powerful illusion.

How does it work?

When we pick up any kind of object, we already have some preconceived idea in our head of how much we expect it to weigh. Now these packs of cards are arranged so that the bottom two decks are filled with Styrofoam, and are extremely light. The top pack has a piece of mild steel inside, and weighs as much as three decks of cards. Now when you lift all three decks, you have an idea in your mind how much they should weigh, and that idea pretty much matches what happens when you pick them all up. However when you pick up the top pack, you are expecting it to weigh about a third of the total weight. In fact it is almost exactly the same weight as the three packs, it is just ever so slightly lighter. However because your brain is expecting it to be so much lighter, it appears that the single pack is much heavier than the three packs combined. Even when you know how it works, it still fools you!

This illusion is called the Charpentier illusion, and it was discovered in 1891. So it has been fooling people for a long time! The traditional explanation said that because we expect the larger item to be heavier, we simply exert more force to lift it. However work by J. Randall Flanagan and Michael A. Beltzner at Queen's University, Ontario, Canada showed that something quite complicated is happening. They found that when people repeatedly lifted equally heavy large and small boxes, they quickly learned to exert the correct force so that they could lift each box a controlled distance, in other words their sensorimotor system could learn very quickly how heavy each box really was. However their cognitive/perceptual parts of the brain still reported that the smaller box was heavier! So two different parts of the brain basically are thinking different things. We supply three boxes from genuine Bicycle decks of cards. They will all be the same colour; and may either be all red boxes, or all blue ones. Two boxes are filled with Styrofoam, and are very light, the third box has a piece of mild steel inside, plus a bit of Styrofoam to stop it moving around. You select another and both dice are thrown, at the same time, a predetermined number of times, to see who gets the highest number on each throw, and hence wins that throw.

In a game of 'The Best of Ten Throws' you will almost always have more wins. Invite the player to choose another dice - perhaps your 'winner' - leaving you to select another for yourself and play again. Again you will win. Whichever die your opponent selects, your choice, in a longer run of ten or more throws, will always win. The secret: Turn up the highest faces on each of the four dice and arrange them in a circle, as shown in the diagram.

Proceeding clockwise around the circle, the dice with the 6's and 2's on it, called the 6-2, will beat the 5-1, the next in the circle, which in turn beats 4-0, which beats 3-3... WHICH IN TURN BEATS 6-2! Your advantage is that you will win 24 times out of 36 - that is 2 times out of 3, or a 66% advantage. So whichever dice your opponent selects - and asking someone to choose first is part of the strategy - you take the next dice backwards in the circle.

Made in the EU

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0881/4018/5947/files/nontransitivediceset1-image1800x600.jpg?v=1729676110
vogl-pfeiferl-set-of-5
Vogl-Pfeiferl (Set of 4)

The famous German Bird Whistle!

The Vogl-Pfeiferl or Bird Whistle is a small musical instrument that allows you to imitate bird calls. Essentially it is a type of sundial that allows you to tell the time wherever you are, so long as the sun is shining. Originally developed in the early 17th century by the English mathematician William Oughtred, it was a development of an earlier instrument, the astronomer's ring, which was used for measuring the altitude of stars and also terrestrial objects.

You need to know your latitude, so this is the first adjustment that you need to make.

Secondly you need to set the date using the sliding section in the middle.

Then you rotate the inner ring until it won't turn any more. Suspend the ring dial by the cord, such that the sun shines through the pinhole in the middle, and hits the centre of the inner ring. From here you can read off the time. When you have finished, you can fold the ring dial flat again. The ring dial does not allow for the 1 hour change in summer time, so you need to factor that in to your calculations. It can work in any latitude from 20 degrees to 75 degrees, in either hemisphere. What is clever is that, unlike a normal sundial that needs to be aligned and requires you to know the exact direction of north, the ring dial does not need this information.

Needs no batteries!

This modern replica is made of solid brass, and comes in a small cardboard presentation box, together with instructions. The Music Box comes with one strip of paper already punched with the tune 'Brahms Lullaby'. There are then 2 blank strips of paper and a hole punch, which will allow you to create tunes of your own! The set consists of the Paper Strip Music Box, a Hole Punch, one sample strip of paper with 'Brahms Lullaby' already punched, and 2 Blank Melody Strip Cards. The Melody Strips are 48cm long, and 4cm wide. The Music Box is 10.5cm (including handle) x 4.5cm x 2.75cm high. Further blank strips are available.

HOLE PUNCH - we were never very keen on the old, metal hole punchers. This music box has a range of just over 3 octaves, but in addition it plays a scale that is mostly chromatic. This expands the musical possibilities enormously, since this new music box can now play sharps and flats. The new music box takes paper strips that are physically the same size as those used in the large music box set. However they have been printed differently, due to the availability of the extra notes.

The 30 Note Music Box Set comes in a plain white box. Inside the box is the Music Box itself, one pre punched strip which plays the theme from Swan Lake, one blank strip, and a hole punch. The Music Box weighs 280 grams, and is 108 mm wide (150 mm wide including the handle), 70 mm deep, and 30 mm high. When packed in the box, with the hole punch and blank strips, the weight is just over 400 grams. There is an important point to make, if you are planning to combine the music box with other instruments. The notes that are marked on the paper strip, i.e. G, A, C, are NOT the notes that the music box actually plays, if you compare it with the notes on a piano. So the line marked F# on the music box plays back as a B, G# plays as a C#, etc. As well as a fun way to learn about music, there are also some serious musicians out there who are using the music box, including Hannah Peel. There is also an app that has been written that allows you to test out new songs and compositions, and when you are happy with the result, you can print out a guide to help you punch out the paper strip.

HOLE PUNCH - we were never very keen on the old, metal hole punchers. Although the ball is not touching the sides of the copper tube, you can still feel the weight of the magnetic ball within the tube. How does it work? The scientific principle is called Lenz's Law. Basically the movement of the falling magnetic ball creates a changing magnetic field inside the metal wall of the tube; according to Faraday's law of induction, the changing magnetic field induces a voltage inside the wall of the tube called electromotive force. Because the tube is made of metal that is a good conductor, this voltage creates electric currents that flow round the walls of the tube - these are called eddy currents. According to the law of excitation, the flowing eddy currents generate a second magnetic field that can affect the magnetic field of the ball. Lenz's law states that this additional magnetic field is always directed to oppose the motion that has generated it : the downward movement of the ball; and the faster the motion, the stronger the slowing force becomes.
