Slapcie

Slapcie dates from the late 1970s, and we first saw it in a shop in Covent Garden. It was invented in the USA, and originally marketed by the American Wham-O company, who were more famous for another product - the frisbee!

However while the frisbee ran and ran (or should that be flew and flew?) the Slapcie toy only made a brief appearance, before vanishing again. Subsequently there was a version of it made in Taiwan for a while.

It consists of a collection of plastic pieces that snap together to create an intriguing mechanical structure. If you make a complete circle with the pieces, the finished article can roll down an incline with an amazing action!
