An unknown American artist designed the "suspension in mid air (on a magnetic cradle) toy" in about 1991. It was marketed by the Nature Company in the USA.
The spindle has two ring magnets attached to it. The end of the spindle touched a glass mirror, which offers negligible friction. Two pairs of magnets hidden within the base provide a magnetic field cushion in order to cradle or support the pen in mid air.
A number of versions of this toy were subsequently produced, including the Desk Top Novel Ball Point Pen that we show here, which was made in the UK.
