This is a modern replica of the original 'Lanes's Telescopic View', which was produced in 1851 to commemorate the opening of the Great Exhibition of 1851.The 1851 Great Exhibition was held in London, in the specially constructed Crystal Palace. It was designed to show the industrial, military and economic superiority of Great Britian, but it also included exhibits from all around the world. Such was the success of the exhibition in economic terms, with over 13,000 exhibits and over 6 million visitors, that the profits from ticket sales paid for the purchase of a substantial piece of land in Kensington, and the building of a number of significant public buildings, including the Science Museum, the National History Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. This 'Telescopic View' is made of printed paper and card, and is supplied in a slip-in card box. When you take the view out of the box, it opens with a concertina action, and you place it on a flat surface. When you view the internal scene through the little peep hole in the cover, you see a three dimensional view of the inside of the Crystal Palace in 1851, and the grand opening by Queen Victoria. It had been Queen Victoria's husband, Price Albert, who had originally suggested the idea of the Great Exhibition, partly because he was fascinated by science and technology, and he and the Queen visited the exhibition on a number of occasions.Ten years later, Albert died of typhoid fever at the early age of 42, and a grieving Victoria - who remained in mourning for him until her death 40 years later - commissioned the Albert Memorial in London. The memorial consists of an ornate pavilion containing a seated statue of Price Albert, covered in gold leaf. Around the pavilion are various sculptures, which include groups depicting Victorian arts and sciences. The book in Price Albert's hand is the catalogue of the Great Exhibition. The Telescopic View is 16cm x 19cm in the case, and opens to around 30cm in length.Watch the video...Write a review about: Telescopic ViewAsk a question about: Telescopic ViewPeople who bought this item also bought:
