When mixed with water, the resulting fluid exhibits rheopectic (the opposite of thixotropic) behaviour, i.e it becomes increasingly resistant to flow when stirred or disturbed in some way.Rheopectic fluids can be used for motion control and regulation. A simple smart fluid damper consists of a container of fluid fitted with either a paddle or a loose piston. Rotary motion of the paddle or linear motion of the piston will be impeded by the fluid above a certain speed. Advanced rheopectic fluids are currently being developed for protective clothing. Fabrics impregnated with a suitable fluid remain flexible in normal use, but instantly stiffen to resist sudden impacts.
