The Wind-up Everbloom Musical Flower, as it was called, was made in Hong Kong in the mid 1980s. It has a clockwork mechanism, and once you have wound it up and started the mechansim, it has a music box inside which plays a little tune, and the main flower slowly opens.
Once the flower has bloomed, it then goes in again, ready for the next time.
The on/off switch also contains a message. Ours says Happy Easter, but the original pack had about 10 labels to choose from, so you could select the most appropriate message depending on who you were giving the flower to and at what time of year.
