Motus

Motus

Designed in the late 1990s by the Japanese inventor Kazunari Higuchi, and sold for a while by the Swiss company Naef.

Basically this toy shows a very unusual movement. There is a plastic track which you place on the table at a sloping angle. Then there is a wooden ellipsoid, which you place at the top of the track. This moves down the track in a very peculiar way. It rolls across the track and slightly downhill, until it hits the other side of the track. Because of the angle that it hits, this collision then causes the ellipsoid to roll back the other way across the track, again moving slightly down the track at the same time.

By means of this eccentric motion, the ellipsoid eventually reaches the bottom of the track. You can alter the angle of the track, which makes the ellipsoid go faster or slower, and the original toy offered a choice of ellipsoid, which was made from Maple, Cherry-tree wood, Walnut or Pear-tree wood. Very unusual.
