Martin Behaim's 1492 globe or 'Erdapfel' (earthapple) is the earliest surviving terrestrial globe. Made just prior to the discovery of the Americas, it gives a clear and fascinating insight into how the world was seen in the 15th century.

As well as the map of the world as it was understood at the time, the globe includes illustrations and inscriptions, taken from Ptolemy, Marco Polo etc, describing fantastic lands, legends, superstitions and amazing beasts.
