Lithophane - London
Lithophanes are often made of porcelain, although we have come across examples made of plastic, and even chocolate!
This lithophane is made of porcelain which is very thin, and contains an image that is only visible when it is back lit. The image is formed because of the differing thickness of the porcelain. Place a lit tea light candle inside, and the picture becomes visible.
Part of the attraction of lithophanes is the way the image appears suddenly, almost out of nowhere, when the candle is lit.
The image includes a number of iconic buildings in London, as well as an image of the London Eye.
The lithophane comes packed in a protective cardboard box. There is a saucer, which you stand the candle on, and then the dome shaped lithophane, which is placed on top. You will need to provide the tea light candle.
