The LEVITRON has been called the best new science toy in a generation - and with good reason! The spinning top floats in space, suspended by an invisible magnetic field. No batteries are needed for the Levitron, the top will simply keep floating in space as long as it is spinning. This amazing physics toy is the nearest you will get to anti-gravity!

You may in the past have tried using one magnet to suspend another magnet in the air, only to find that this is pretty tricky. In fact it cannot be done, and in 1842 the Rev. Samuel Earnshaw published the theorem which now bears his name, which proved mathematically that you could not suspend one magnet using another magnet. There are however two exceptions to the rule. Earnshaw's theorem only applies to ferromagnetic materials; you can create a perfectly good magnetic levitation if you use diamagnetic materials. The other exception is the Levitron, where the spinning top - involving gyroscopic action and precession - allows for spin stabilised magnetic levitation. Earnshaw would be turning (or is that spinning?) in his grave!

  an excellent demonstation of magnetic levitation.  I am astounded no-one has reviewed this fascinating gadget. It has to be said it takes a certain amount of patience to get it working, and it is very sensitive to variations in room temperature, etc, the adjustable weights which finally work one day, may not work next day, and you have to start adjusting again, but when you have the balance right, it hovers for several minutes,in mid air.It is a great source if interest to visitors, and usually a frustration when they can't replicate your feat, (gained by experience and practice).   Carl Watson
