You may in the past have tried using one magnet to suspend another magnet in the air, only to find that this is pretty tricky. In fact it cannot be done, and in 1842 the Rev. Samuel Earnshaw published the theorem which now bears his name, which proved mathematically that you could not suspend one magnet using another magnet. There are however two exceptions to the rule. Earnshaw's theorem only applies to ferromagnetic materials; you can create a perfectly good magnetic levitation if you use diamagnetic materials. The other exception is the Levitron, where the spinning top - involving gyroscopic action and precession - allows for spin stabilised magnetic levitation. Earnshaw would be turning (or is that spinning?) in his grave!
