Jolly Jugs, or siphon jugs as they are sometimes called, were popular in the mid 19th century, and are basically an old-fashioned form of practical joke. While you can fill them with water or any other liquid, and pour from the spout in the normal way, you can also make the liquid come out from a hole in the bottom of the jug! Here is a demonstration of how they work...

Essentially there is a siphon within the handle, and water can pass from inside the jug, up inside the handle and then down the other side of the handle, emerging from a hole in the bottom of the jug.

The person holding the jug can control what happens, because there is a very small hole in the handle, and the siphon will only work if you place your finger over this hole. Having done so, you need to tilt the jug back slightly towards the handle, to prime the siphon.

Water (or whatever liquid you are using) will continue to flow from the hole in the bottom of the jug, until you remove your finger from the small hole, which will break the siphon.

We recently managed to get a few Jolly Jugs at a London auction. They are mid 19th century Staffordshire earthenware jugs, and there are two designs - the round jug that you see at the top of the page, and the jug that has the flat sides, shown above.
