The Candle Powered Tin Boat is the simplest example of a steam engine you can find!Use the dropper to fill one of the exhaust pipes with water, until you see water coming out of the other pipe. Then float the boat in water. Finally, place the candle on the tray, light, and place inside the boat. Watch her go!How does it work?Inside the boat is a loop of narrow copper tubing, with both ends pointing out of the stern of the boat, below the water. The candle causes the water to boil inside the tube, and turn to steam. The steam expands, and pushes the water out of the two ends of the tube, causing the boat to move forwards. However as the steam continures to expand, it reaches a part of the tube that used to contain water, and is therefore colder. The steam condenses, and this causes more water to be sucked back into the tube, and for the process to be repeated. If you put your finger over the end of the copper tubes, while the boat is in the water, you can feel little pulses, between 5 and 10 a second, as the water is expelled from the tubes. These are sometimes known as 'pop pop' boats, because of the noise that they make. The boat is 20cm long, and comes complete with a dropper, the candle tray and 3 candles. This tin boat uses an open flame, and is not suitable for children under 10 years old. Adult supervision is needed. Write a review about: Candle Powered BoatAsk a question about: Candle Powered BoatPeople who bought this item also bought:
